World’s First Zika Virus Vaccine Developed in India

Bharat Biotech, a Hyderabad based pharmaceutical company, on Wednesday claimed to have achieved a breakthrough in developing a vaccine to fight the dreaded mosquito-borne Zika virus.

World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Zika virus as international public health emergency, affects pregnant women and their babies. It has also been said that the virus can also be spread by having unprotected sex.

The virus has affected nearly 3,530 devastating birth defect cases in Brazil and is spreading rapidly in Latin America and Asia.

Krishna Ella, CMD Bharat Biotech, said they have some most brilliant scientist in the world and already began research work on Zika virus a year ago. “On Zika, we are probably the first vaccine company in the world to file a vaccine candidate patent about nine months ago,” said Dr Krishna Ella, CMD, Bharat Biotech Ltd.

“We believe we have an early mover advantage in developing the Zikavac and we are probably the first in the world to file for global patent for Zika vaccine candidates”

“We have two candidate vaccines in development. One of them is an inactivated vaccine that has reached the stage of pre-clinical testing in animals,” Ella said.

The company is in hope to announce the Zikavac to world as early as possible.
