Hima Das was born on 9th January 2000 in Dhing, Nagaon, Assam. Hima Das is the first Indian woman to win a Gold medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championship. She is an Indian Sprinter and first Indian track athlete to win gold medal at international event.
She won gold medal in women’s 400m at World Under-20 Athletics Championship at Tampere in Finland with a time of 51.46 seconds.
She has also competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in both the 400 metres and the 4×400 meters relay.
She is 18 yrs old and daughter of Ronjit and jomali Das in small village of Assam. Her father is a rice farmer. Hima Das is the youngest of six children.
Hima Das is 5 feet and 8 inch tall and weighs around 62 kg. Her eyes and hair are black in colour.
Hima Das started off by playing football with boys in her school with an aim to become football player to play for India one day.
But, she was suggested to become an athlete. Nipon Das met Hima Das in an inter-district meet and started coaching her. For this, she has to move to Guwahati which is 140 km from her village. Her parents were not ready but later convinced by her coach Nipon Das. At, first she was introduced to boxing and football. A separate wing was started later for athletics. Nipon arranged a rented apartment for Hima near Sarusajai Sports Complex.
She is now part of a group of Indian atheletes wo have won medals at the World U20 Championships, which includes Seema Punia (Bronze, Discus throw), Navjeet Kaur Dhillon (Bronze, Discus throw) and Neeraj Chopra (Gold, Javelin throw).
