Custodial Deaths of Jeyaraj and Fenix in Tamil Nadu
The death of Jayaraj and Fenix a father and son in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi died in police custody has sparked huge outrage because their crime was that they opened their shop a little longer for 15 mins during lockdown.
The news went viral after RJ Suchitra, a radio Jocky at Radio Mirchi 98.3 shared a video on her social media platform and mentioned the horrifying details of the incidents appealed to the people to share much as possible and make it a nation talk rather than a south Indian issue. She made #JusticeForJayarajandFenix to support the inhuman issue happened in Tamil Nadu. People are also calling this incident as the ‘George Floyds Of India’. On social media the hashtag #JusticeForJayarajandFenix trends on Twitter and Instagram which leads to protest by the local people.
P Jayaraj and his son Fenix were arrested last Friday for keeping their mobile phone shop in Tuticorin open beyond permitted hours and died at a hospital four days later. The relatives alleged that they were severely thrashed at the Sathankulam police station by police personnel.
Recently, many celebrities from Bollywood and South Indian Film industries have spoken about the incident including sportsperson, brands, bloggers, comedian and many social media influences from India and worldwide.
Priyanka Chopra Tweeted on Twitter : “Reeling from what I’m hearing. Absolutely stunned, sad and angry. No human being deserves such brutality, whatever be their crime. The guilty must not be allowed to go unpunished. We need facts. I cannot even begin to imagine what the family must be going through. Sending strength and prayers. We need to use our collective voices to seek #JusticeForJayarajandBennicks .
