From cricket starts to politicians, everyone has praised this film. Whether it was Sachin Tendulker, Amir Khan or Arvind Kejriwal (well he likes every film he watches. So…….) – they all agree that Neerja is a film that one should not miss. But let’s not get carried away so soon. Let’s have an in-depth look at the movie Neerja and find out what it’s all about and whether it is really worth spending your hard earned money on the movie or not.
As is already known, the movie depicts the life of a real life hero named Neerja Bhanot who sacrificed her life saving the passengers of Pan Am 73 when it was hijacked in 1986. One of the best things about Neerja is the fact that unlike most other Bollywood movies, this one cuts to the chase without much drama and introduces the main character straight away. Credit for this must go to director Ram Madhvani. The film tried to portray things as they were and did not fall into the trap of extracting sympathy or espouse hate towards its characters.
Character of Neerja is played by Sonam Kapoor, who in the very first scene declares “zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahi” , which we think aptly describes this film. As far as Sonam Kapoor’s performance in the film is concerned, let’s just say it was good. At least much better than what he have seen from her in any of her previous films. Could it have been better? Of course. But then there is always room for improvement isn’t it? At least in this one we can judge her performance objectively since there are no swanky clothes to take our attention away from her.
She quite beautifully depicts the scenes of her troubled past where she gets into an arranged marriage and spends life with an abusive husband. In the film she reads out two letters – one from her abusive husband and one from a friend (played by Shekhar Ravjiani) who proposes her. In both these scenes she excels and shows us that she more than the fashion diva everyone thinks her to be.
The best performance in the movie comes from Rama and Harish, Neerja’s middle aged parents played extremely well by Shabana Azmi and Yogendra Tikku. With their performance they make the Bhanot household come alive on screen and pulls the viewers immediately into their world. As always, Shabana Azmi’s performance as Neerja’s mother is superb to say the least as she moves you to tears when she speaks about her brave daughter in the film and how she misses her every moment after her death.
Overall Neerja is a movie one MUST watch. It is a story of a real life hero made in Bollywood in a way that you would probably have never expected.
