Huawei Mate 20 X 5G review

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is a big 5G phone launched by Huawei with much more to offer than the 4G Huawei Mate 20. With a 7.2-inch OLED screen, a 40MP camera and a Kirin 980 chipset, 4,200mAh high capacity battery, the Mate 20 X 5G excel in every field. But, is it worth buying considering it is one of the fewest 5G phones around? Let’s check it out in the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G review below:

Design and display

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is a stunner when it comes to looks and premium quality. On the front, there is a teardrop notch and very thin bezels around the screen. The back panel captures hyper optical patterning repelling fingerprints. The aluminum frame is packed between the front and rear glass panels. Under the camera bump, there is a weird fingerprint scanner. A device charging premium price having a rear fingerprint scanner instead of an in-display fingerprint sensor! Just as you saw in OnePlus 7 Pro, the Mate 20 X features a triple camera system with ultra-wide, main and telephoto lenses. The device is protected by Gorilla Glass on both panels.

On the bottom, there lies a USB-C port with stereo speakers. Volume rockers and power buttons lie on the right side.

Coming to the display, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G packs a huge 7.2 inches OLED display with 1080 x 2244 resolution. This display offers a great viewing experience. It isn’t as sharp as Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and OnePlus 7 Pro 5G though but still managed to provide crisp viewing experience. When it comes to outdoor usage, max brightness suffices your purpose.

Performance

Under the hood, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G has a Kirin 980 chipset coupled with 8GB of RAM. Although this device is not carrying the latest Kirin chipset, it is still very powerful. You won’t see any signs of lags at heaviest of heavy usages. The device works smooth as butter and has managed to score9,675 on Geekbench multi-core, and 3,283 single-core test. FYI- the device stays in the same league as Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. The device comes with 256GB storage onboard with a nano memory card slot too. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is very responsive and easy to reach.

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G runs Android 9 Pie out of the box coupled with Huawei’s EMUI 9 custom skin.

Cameras

The Mate 20 X 5G features a triple-rear camera module which we found on the Mate 20 Pro too. The triple-camera module includes a 40MP main sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 20MP ultra-wide lens with f/2.2 aperture, and an 8MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. On the front, there is a 24MP selfie camera. The low-light capabilities of this device are as good as the P30 series. The device is capable of capturing well-detailed macro shots, wide-angle group photos, and zoomed-in portraits. The photos come out well-detailed with a broad dynamic range and take excellent photos. In the low-lighting environment, the device captures great images too- no signs of noise and grains. The selfie camera captures some great shots with filters and AI modes to beautify the images. While there is no autofocus, the HDR capabilities bring the best images out of every click.

Battery Life

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G packs a high-capacity 4,200mAh battery which is the same battery capacity as the Huawei P30 Pro. Compare it to Huawei’s Mate 20 X, you will find that this device has a stripped-back battery capacity. Huawei’s Mate 20 X 5G’s battery is sufficient which can give you one-day usage with 5-10% still left in the bank. On a 90-minute Full HD video playback test, the device’s battery depleted by about 15%. The Mate 20 X 5G supports fast-charging – up to 40W and powers up the device up to 100% in just an hour. Final Verdict

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is a great but weird device. Yes, it is an excellent phone for the ones who are looking for a 5G device. The device is designed beautifully and on the front, you see engulfing screen with minimal bezels. The camera performs fantastic-all, there is plenty of storage, and the UI is stable too. The battery is sure keeps the phone alive for one-day but we wish it was a bit better. Although, it supports 40W fast charging. So, if you are looking for a big 5G phone, then Mate 20 X 5G can entertain you. Yes, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G models are in the market too which competes with this device straight out. But, if you are in the Huawei ecosystem, then you must not get out of it and surely buy Mate 20 X 5G. A steal deal!
